Jonathan Keren-Black
Leo Baeck Centre Rabbi
East Kew, Melbourne, Victoria
After ordination in London in 1988, I worked at a Synagogue in Elstree Hertfordshire for 15 years. I was involved in developing the pluralist Jewish state school sector with primary schools and eventually the Jewish Community Secondary School. I was also involved in developing the new liturgy of the UK Liberal Jewish Movement
ENVIRONMENT
and became heavily involved in environmental work, building an underground house in London, and an Eco-House in Camberwell after arriving in Melbourne in 2003, where I also established JECO, the Jewish Ecological Coalition, and has been involved with The Australian Religious Response to Climate Change for some years. I am very concerned about the unfolding climate crisis and consider it the most pressing threat to humanity.
INTERFAITH
I was also instrumental in establishing the Jewish Christian Muslim Association of Australia. In 2007, I spoke at an interfaith seminar in Canberra with the Dalai Lama on ‘Paths to Peace’, and also gave a keynote lecture for the First Common Dreams conference in Sydney and again in 2019.
NEW LITURGY
I believe in putting prayer into practice. This brings the importance of the words and experience of prayer into sharp focus. For this reason, I was a leader of the editorial teams for the latest Shabbat and Daily prayer book (2010) and more recently the High Holy Day one (2019), used in Progressive congregations across the region.
