A visit to Sydney's oldest synagogue: virtually

Building a synagogue has been a milestone for Jews throughout ancient and recent history. The first synagogue built in the Australian colonies was consecrated in Sydney's York Street in April 1844. Contemporary records acclaimed the piety of traditional liturgy and the synagogue's Egyptian architecture. Sadly, this rare example of colonial architecture was lost in 1878 when the congregation moved to the new Great Synagogue on Elizabeth Street. Until recently, only a few images of the synagogue's exterior have been known, and apart from a loose description of the inner sanctuary, we could only guess what ambience surrounded the early Jews during their prayers. Drawing on Jana's research and based on Zac's findings of interior plans and his 3D imaging experience, we present the first comprehensive art history and virtual recreation of the oldest synagogue in Sydney.
