What does it mean to live as a Jew, but need to appear as a practicing Christian? In 1290, the Jews were expelled from England by Edward I – but what about those who secretly stayed? This session will explore the situation of Jews in Medieval England, and how the Spanish Inquisition and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 brought about pressure on the English monarchs to consider readmitting the Jews into England, and later into her colonies. We will discuss Juan Luis Vives: his family background, his philosophies, and the reasons he fled Spain in 1509 never to return.
